Kögel keeps their comprehensive product portfolio available for the field trials of the German Ministry of Transport
Burtenbach, 22nd November 2011
- From a single supplier - Kögel provides the approved vehicle combinations for the field trials: Kögel Euro Trailer, Kögel Long Truck and Kögel LongPlex, and thus underscores its leadership in innovation
- Semi-trailers extended by 1.3 metres, such as the Kögel Euro Trailer, can be used on the entire road network because of their official acceptance for the field trials "Innovative Commercial Vehicle Concepts" carried out by the German Ministry of Transport in the participating Federal German States
- ADAC (the German Automobile Association) and the transport logistics associations recommend moderate extension of semi-trailers
- Kögel Euro Trailer facilitates expansion of combined traffic
Kögel is holding the comprehensive range of trailers available for the transport industry at the start of the field trials for innovative commercial vehicle concepts, from the present time: There is a range of various variants to choose from, alongside the Euro Trailer extended by 1.3 metres to 14.9 metres and the Long Truck having a total length of 25.25 metres. The Euro Trailer, together with the semi-trailer tractor unit, has a total length of 17.8 metres and is thus 7 metres shorter than a Long Truck. In addition, Kögel is the only trailer manufacturer to offer a semi-trailer for carrying two 7.45 metre swap body mounts - the LongPlex. Kögel thus has the appropriate product solutions for the most different of transporting tasks.
Benefits offered by the Kögel Euro Trailer
If vehicle combinations having a total length of up to 25.25 metres are only allowed to drive on a defined road network during the field trials, semi-trailer units using the Kögel Euro Trailer, extended by 1.3 metres, are not affected. That means that semi-trailer vehicles having a total length of up to 17.8 metres are allowed to use the entire road network in the States of Bavaria, Hamburg, Hesse, Lower Saxony, Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia. For traffic safety reasons, the Ministry of Transport has stipulated obligatory technical measures for all vehicle combinations taking part in the field trials.
Official acceptance
The ADAC and transport logistics associations recommended, in a letter to the Transport Minister Dr. Ramsauer, moderate extensions to semi-trailers. This is partly because extended trailers permit the expansion of combined traffic and are safer in traffic, as confirmed by analysis work carried out by renowned universities. The Euro Trailer is fully rail-loadable in several of its variants.
Kögel welcomes the field trials since, in the next five years, they will show that extended semi-trailers and Long Trucks make a significant contribution to increasing economic and ecological efficiency in commercial traffic. There is a high demand throughout Europe for the Euro Trailer extended by 1.3 metres.

Kögel – a brand steeped in more than 75 years of tradition, which has earned itself a leading position throughout Europe, is back in the limelight, with renewed vigour and its unmistakable blend of experience and expertise. With the takeover of Kögel in 2009, Ulrich Humbaur assumed an active entrepreneurial role which gave the brand the stability and continuity it deserves. This is further consolidated by the very sturdy equity ratio that Ulrich Humbaur has made available to his company. Kögel has reinvented itself – by returning to the strengths which formerly made the company great: A passion for transport. Quality characterized by engineering. Innovation which is worthy of this name because it brings relevant customer value. And the reliability of an owner-managed family company with long-term prospects. In addition to products for the forwarding industry, there are now models for the building and construction industry, one that is not an entirely new sphere for Kögel.
