“Le belle macchine di LetExpo”: Kögel’s innovative trailers boost intermodal transport

Press release | 02.03.23

Kögel will be presenting three innovative solutions for intermodal transport in Verona from March 8 to 11: The Euro Trailer Cargo, Light Plus Rail and Triplex offer customers throughout Europe economic advantages and play their part in the provision of environmentally friendly transport thanks to the customised lightweight construction and volume optimization. In addition, Kögel is expanding its range for the construction industry and will be showcasing the extensively revamped Kögel tipper.

Kögel provides a suitable solution for all transport requirements, whether by road or for combined transport by rail, and whether volume- or payload-sensitive loads, piece goods or bulk goods. Tailor-made solutions are also available to satisfy the stringent demands of the Italian customers. Trailers supplied by the long-established German vehicle manufacturer also offer all customers from the transport, logistics and construction industries significant economic and ecological advantages - in line with the company’s guiding principle of 'Economy meets Ecology’. Kögel will demonstrate this at Stand 2, Hall 6 at the LetExpo trade fair.
A particular highlight for all combined transport companies is the Kögel Lightplus Rail. This special, weight-optimised trailer offers a weight advantage of up to one tonne over comparable standard versions. It thus combines the advantages of lightweight trailers with the use of rail as an environmentally friendly mode of transport. To achieve this, Kögel developers revised the frame of the Kögel Cargo Rail extensively and based the design on the lightweight trailers from the Lightplus series, allowing customers to benefit from the weight advantage.

300 kilograms more payload or lower fuel consumption

With the basic equipment, the Kögel Lightplus Rail weighs 6,060 kilograms, making it 300 kilograms lighter than the standard version of the Kögel Cargo Rail. This model is thus already one of the lightest trailers in its class, and weighs approximately 200 kilograms less than comparable trailers from competing manufacturers. With the help of optional lightweight features, the tare weight of the Lightplus Rail can be further reduced down to 5,750 kilograms.
This is of significant value as rail-loadable trailers are, as a general rule, considerably heavier than road-only models due to the construction required for their application, e.g., reinforced gripper mounts. However, the higher tare weight reduces the trailer’s payload and increases the fuel consumption, or CO2 emissions, of the tractor unit on the road. Kögel customers do not have to make any compromises in terms of load capacity and durability. The light, rail-loadable trailer is just as robust as standard versions thanks to the clever lightweight construction.

Ten percent reduction in CO2 emissions

The Kögel Euro Trailer Cargo is specially designed for high-volume transport. It has been scientifically proven that it reduces the CO2 footprint of the transported cargo by ten percent due to an increase of ten percent in the load capacity and the addition of four Euro pallet spaces. As soon as the implementation regulations are available, it will also be possible for Italian transport companies to use the 1.38-meter longer semi-trailer in Italy.
Transport fleets in Germany have been successfully using the “extended” semi-trailers for more than a decade. In contrast to other long truck designs, the use of the Euro Trailer does not require any adaptation of the existing infrastructure. It can still be used without any problems on narrower roads and roads with tight bends where longer transport options reach their limit. The Euro Trailer Cargo can also be individually tailored to customer requirements through the wide range of equipment options.

First-rate specialist for all container types

The Kögel Port 45 Triplex is the ideal trailer for all carriers who require maximum flexibility in the challenging container transport sector. The triple-extending chassis can carry all common container types from 20 to 45 feet and, despite its versatility, is one of the lightest container chassis on the market with a tare weight of 4,360 kilograms (including optional equipment).
The flexibility and high payload of the Port 45 Triplex enable both a high degree of capacity utilization and an especially favourable carbon footprint during transportation. An independent jury of experts granted the "European Transport Award for Sustainability 2020” as acknowledgement of this.

Kögel tipper – lightweight, robust and versatile

Kögel also has a wide range of vehicles to suit the construction industry. The Kögel tipper, which has just been revamped extensively, will be presented in Verona. The new tipper is even more configurable to individual requirements and can thus be used for an even wider range of applications. Kögel supplies all tippers as a two or three-axle trailer with a steel chassis. Customers can also choose between different trough designs. For the transport of bulk materials, Kögel offers a full-steel trough and a weight-optimised steel/aluminium trough.
The models with a thermally insulated asphalt trough also come with additional enhancements, developed specifically for the trailer's use in road construction. These include a new asphalt spreader, which can be metered with exceptional precision, and guards to prevent damage from milled material and bulk goods. The optimisations to the body and chassis aim to deliver more durability, convenience and enhanced safety.

Kögel expands range and sales team in Italy

In addition to their own construction vehicles, Kögel will be selling heavy construction and flatbed trailers from their sister company Humbaur in Italy in the future. Michele Mastagni, Managing Director of Kögel Italia srl explains “This will give our customers in Italy an even broader range of products from a single source: Customer focus is one of our top priorities. It is for this same reason that Kögel is increasing its sales force in Italy."
