Pulling the brake on costs

Press release | 16.02.23

Kögel Telematics optimises the operating costs of a trailer significantly. The integration of a tyre pressure monitoring system, which will be compulsory in all trailers in the future, also plays its part.

The Kögel Telematics system is a key component in ensuring the optimal technical condition of the trailer. Developed specially for trailers by the Burtenbach-based trailer manufacturer, the telematics system captures important data from the towed unit in real time and presents it clearly in Kögel’s very own portal. Furthermore, it warns fleet operators about extraordinary events. These include deviations in tyre pressure from the target value. Due to the major influence of tyre condition on the safety and fuel consumption of a truck, all newly registered trailers in the EU must be equipped with a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) from July 2024 onwards.
Deviating from the ideal tyre pressure impairs driving stability and increases fuel consumption and tyre wear. It also increases the risk of a burst tyre. This can result in unplanned downtime and high costs – or in the worst-case scenario, an accident. With Kögel’s very own trailer telematics system, situations like these can be effectively avoided. “Kögel Telematics helps keep the vehicle in optimal condition, thus optimising operating costs,” says Thomas Gregor, Head of Kögel Telematics.

Analysis tools enable increased transport efficiency

What’s more, the telematics system warns the operator if the truck leaves the planned route (geofencing) or the internal temperature of a refrigerated vehicle deviates from the specified value. Comprehensive analysis tools help to improve transport routes and utilisation of the trailer. Kögel Telematics also serves as the basis for full-service contracts from Kögel at affordable monthly rates. Thomas Gregor explains “Together, they constitute an all-round carefree package for all new trailers from Kögel”. Regular maintenance work is conducted by one of the many Kögel-contracted repair workshops in Europe.
The full-service package includes all service tasks required and recommended by Kögel according to the maintenance check list, including any spares, wear parts and materials required to complete them. In addition, it includes all repairs required due to wear and tear on vehicles under the contract provided that they were used appropriately for their intended purpose.
Kögel Telematics and Kögel Full Service are two elements of a transport solution from Kögel. As well as the trailer, this encompasses the full range of value-added services throughout the entire life cycle of the towed unit – from procurement to trading in the used trailer. The goal of this solution is to provide all Kögel customers with cost security. That’s why the trailer manufacturer equips all trailers with Kögel Telematics hardware as standard. Retrofitting of existing trailers is also possible. Contracts tailored to their individual vehicle use allow customers to activate precisely the functions that they need. For the whole of 2023, Kögel is offering a no-obligation, free trial subscription lasting three months. Now every fleet operator can try out the benefits of trailer telematics risk-free. “Kögel Telematics forms the basis for full-service contracts from Kögel. These are the all-round carefree package for all new trailers.” Thomas Gregor, Head of Kögel Telematics
Another advantage of Kögel Telematics are the open interfaces. They allow the data from Kögel Telematics to be integrated into third-party portals. All information is also accessible on Android devices via an app. Customers can use two different apps to get even more value out of Kögel Telematics. The free Kögel Driver app informs the driver about the location and technical condition of the trailer. Meanwhile, the paid Kögel Tour app serves as a means of communication between the dispatcher and the driver. The dispatcher can contact the driver and assign them jobs directly via the telematics portal. In addition, the driver receives important information about the trailer. This includes the internal temperature of the refrigerated body, tyre pressure and EBS data. The driver can also use the app to log the compulsory departure check before every trip.

Tip: Use of "De minimis" funding

Activating Kögel Telematics pays for itself through the optimised operating costs of the trailer. Additionally, the state supports the purchase, rental and leasing of driver assistance systems, as well as the hardware and software for communication solutions for connecting the truck to the system as part of the "De-minimis" funding programme. For this purpose, it provides subsidies of up to 80 percent of the investment value, with a maximum of 2,000 euros per vehicle or 33,000 euros per fleet, per year.
